Farmers' Market (Chicago)

We do a lot of farmers' markets. Last year, they brought in most of our sales. This year, we'll be doing a lot more - as many as we can. We're hoping to get into the prestigious and fabulous Evanston farmers' market, as well as a number of other Chicago markets, both public and private, such as Logan Square, Federal Plaza, Lincoln Square, and a few others yet. A farmers' market employee would be responsible for four markets per week, most likely on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday (though there is some flexibility in that). The position requires a lot of energy, enthusiasm, and attentiveness. You get to know all the wonderful loyal customers of ours and meet all the fascinating farmer types for our "weekly social event" (otherwise we'd never get off the farm until December). No car is too small - one employee easily used a VW Beetle to do it all - but you do need an insured vehicle and drivers' license. Due to the nature of the position, and the importance of the farmers' market to our business, a season-long commitment is required (approx. mid-May through mid-October for most markets). Volunteer (Farm)

While we only have so much room for paid interns, volunteers are always welcome at the farm, any time of the growing season. As mentioned above, we always need some extra hands in June for strawberries and from mid-July through September for tomatoes. There are also plenty of small projects to work on. We do require that volunteers come for the times that have been worked out between the volunteer and the farm manager or give advance notice if that isn't possible. Please wear proper attire - long pants, long sleeves, and comfortable work shoes or light boots are absolutely necessary for most work, even if it is 90 degrees outside (and 100 in the hoophouses!). A hat is very helpful, and make sure you have water with you at all times (we can provide the water). Work gloves and tools are all at the farm. TIP: Don't count on sunscreen to do a lick of good.
